Dogs with Arthritis – Treat Joint Pain in Your Dog Today

Arthritis is a huge problem for dogs in the United States. What is arthritis? Arthritis is inflammation of the joints. Now most of the time, as far as dogs are concerned, we are talking about osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is inflammation of the joints involving the bones and joints as well. The most common joints that we have seen involved in dog arthritis are the hip joints, the knee joints and the elbow joints of the dog. Now why do we see disease in these three joints – the hip, the knee or the elbow?

Dogs develop arthritis mainly because of the wear and tear on the joints. Now wear and tear brings up another point. If your dog is involved in a lot of use, you know if it is a hunting dog, has lots of walks or jogs with you, then the joints are going to have more wear and tear. Another wear and tear issue is weight. Dogs that are heavy are going to have more wear and tear on those joints.

Just like any other dog disease, osteoarthritis needs to be diagnosed. The way it is done is by physical exam, and often by X-ray. The physical exam can kind of isolate which joints are affected. X-rays can tell whether the dog has arthritis which is just plain information of the joints and can be caused by lots of other things versus osteoarthritis which is a disease involving the bones of the dog. X-ray can differentiate between the two. The treatment is vastly different depending on which one your dog has.

How do we treat osteoarthritis in dogs? A veterinarian usually treat it in a few ways. First, the pain caused by the disease is treated. There are a lot of prescription pain medications available for dogs. Talk to your veterinarian about this. You can use some of the over-the-counter medicines, but again talk to your veterinarian because some of these medications can potentially be toxic. Alternatively, you can try an all-natural dog arthritis treatment such as the Pet Bounce dog joint pain relief.
